Kullervo performance in Tokyo

This November the Polytech Choir will have the pleasure of traveling to Japan to perform Jean Sibelius’s Kullervo with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. The concert held at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan hall will be conducted by renowned conductor Hannu Lintu. Baritone Tuomas Pursio will perform as Kullervo and mezzo-soprano Niina Keitel as his sister.

The piece is a significant part of the choir’s repertoire for celebrating Finland’s 100th year of independence. Performing our national composer’s work internationally is sure to be the highlight of 2017 for every choir member. The story of Kullervo is part of Finland’s national epic Kalevala. The collection of poetry still holds a considerable amount of cultural history and is known to virtually every Finn.

Avid fans will remember that the last time the choir performed Kullervo was back in 2015 at the BBC Proms festival in London. More information on the upcoming performance is available on the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra’s website.
